We play into the hands of those who benefit from polarization when we allow ourselves to be manipulated into simplistic and narrow view points.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05025492709452476763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6348662971403602237.post-64707911271565158432013-01-08T15:55:34.510+00:002013-01-08T15:55:34.510+00:00Your link worked - it was my own that didn't f...Your link worked - it was my own that didn't for me. Yes the book I was referring to is called Islamic Manners.

I think you are absolutely right about teaching our children how to read between the lines. I do feel in my home ed that learning how to find information and then critique it is the essence of a good education!

But a good way to learn to read between the lines is by discussing concrete examples. We do have plenty of "difference" both in our family and wider circles. And in some ways understanding and tolerance is a "transferable skill". But my children are growing up in an environment where they rarely come in contact with Muslims, and yet are encountering anti-Muslim sentiment in the media etc. I think it is irresponsible at best and very dangerous at worst for non Muslim children to grow up without that sentiment being actively challenged by those they trust. When I read your post it struck me that demonstrating to my kids how biased our history books are through these examples shows vividly both the propaganda of history and also that Islam is NOT synonymous with terrorist threat but a rich and interesting culture with a long history. I was shocked myself how many of the things (almost all) I had not ever questioned as to their validity or lack of.

Thank you for your blog :-)
Alison alisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03788516787252247697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6348662971403602237.post-41030301552864414812013-01-07T12:45:09.789+00:002013-01-07T12:45:09.789+00:00Hmm that's odd - the links work for me :/

The thing with history is that it can never be objective - it's always written by the victor and usually for propaganda - and usually male-centric. His-story as opposed to her-story, in fact. So long as we are aware of that and teach our children to read between the lines that's really all we can do, isn't it?

The book you link is about Islamic manners - is that the book you are referring to??Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05025492709452476763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6348662971403602237.post-75854755456063095322013-01-07T12:05:56.576+00:002013-01-07T12:05:56.576+00:00Sorry - the link didn't work - the book I aske...Sorry - the link didn't work - the book I asked about is called "Islamic Manners: Activity Book".
Alisonalisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03788516787252247697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6348662971403602237.post-82326810117695406962013-01-07T12:03:29.746+00:002013-01-07T12:03:29.746+00:00Did these facts come from the books you mention? We are not Muslim but that doesn't mean I approve of a Eurocentric approach to history! In fact I have a similar story with regard to the skewing of historical "facts". My husband is Polish, and it is remarkable to compare how/what we were taught in school about the second world war - even though our countries were on the same side!

While I was looking on Amazon at the books you mentioned I saw this book - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0860374637/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE - and wondered if you thought it would be useful for a non-Muslim family. Or indeed if you have any recommendations. Our boys are 10 and 7.
Thank you - I love reading your blog.
Alisonalisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03788516787252247697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6348662971403602237.post-45191006489216816842013-01-06T09:11:21.367+00:002013-01-06T09:11:21.367+00:00Hi five Debbie ;) Hi five Debbie ;) Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6348662971403602237.post-83077909966542468662013-01-05T12:53:59.185+00:002013-01-05T12:53:59.185+00:00It's terrible, isn't it?
