Those boys of mine, they bake! Did you know that? They love to mess up my kitchen and make yummy things. Scones, cookies, bark. We have sweet things down flat. Now all I need to teach them is how to chop an onion without removing their fingers and peel a potato in under ten minutes and I'm ready to take early retirement!

But a few more cookies first...

They love to bake. They love to get their hands dirty with flour. They love to show others what they have made, and let them taste how good it is (it usually is). They love to eat what they have made.

Now if I could get them to love clearing up, make me tea and rub my feet, we'd have the most perfect day...

Days are beginning to merge into one as Ramadan rolls on; we live for iftar with as much mindful living as we can.

We fill our weekend with games, reading, playing and, for 'tis the season for it, apple crumble with whipped cream!

Our apples are still reddening up on the tree, and soon, insha'allah, they too will be made into pies and crumbles. And as much as I look forward to the coming season, I do so want to hold onto this one as much as possible!

What was your weekend like?

The Need to Knead

Most days I actively avoid the kitchen. I do have to make a concerted effort to go in there. I am trying to get better about food, but it's an effort.

Some days though, there is nowhere else I'd rather be. I pootle in full pootle mode. Bread gets made, cookies get baked, scones are hot off the tray and the jars are filled with goodies. And I pootle on and on, quite content in my role as maker and baker.

There is something very therapeutic about pounding a pile of dough into something malleable and bakable, and a new trick of mine when I'm feeling funky is to now purposely GO in the kitchen, rather than run away and hide under the duvet, and bake bread.

I have learned that, a little bit like knitting, my brain goes into zone-out mode, I begin to enter a state of meditation and part of me quietens down, relaxes, feels purposeful and useful and an a couple hours later we not only have bread, but a stress-free mama.

I'm not a foodie, but I may actually get to be one in time by concerted effort and zen-like meditation...
