One afternoon the babes made these rolled candles out of beeswax sheets. A simple craft whilst I baked. They are so easy and so quick to make that we usually end up with a drawerful by the time they are done.

Adding their light makes the afternoons a little bit sweeter as they clean the air for us. Gloomy days made bearable by making light.

Return of the Light

Maybe I'm being a little too needy for it, but I do declare that the light is getting stronger every day, yes it is.

The days are stretching here, ever so slightly, but enough to remind me of the promise of the next season, enough to keep me hanging on.

Is it too soon to plan for spring?

It's all about the light these days. We chase it and soak it up for as long as we can before it dips and wanes. We try to get as much done in the daylight hours, we try to appreciate real light, we relish the blue sky days, even if it means a little colder weather follows.

And when we have greedily gorged on the little bit of real sun, we switch it back on at dusk with full spectrum bulbs. Not the same, but aids the sanity a little.

There is no mistaking what time of year it is. By mid-afternoon crazy light starts casting long shadows and gloom descends. We're playing by lamplight again. The blankets are on the knees. Where once I would be out fussing over the vegetables or flowers, that time is now spent on knitting. With hot tea. Of course.

It's a smidgen off a quarter to winter. The light tells me so... and as much as my delicate mental balance blanches at the thought of a whole season ahead filled with gloom, I hope the cosy that we make and find in our days kinda makes up for it...
