There are many practical considerations when thrifting furniture, or indeed thrifting anything. The first is, what is it? There are many beautiful follies out there that look good but have no real practical application in real life. Telephone tables spring to mind...
The second is size - will it fit in your teeny tiny built-for-midgets ghetto terraced town house? Oft times the answer is 'no. of course it won't, even *people* don't fit in your teeny tiny built-for-midgets ghetto terraced town house'. Time to walk away making mental notes of where you put it in your dream home/farm one day in the future. If you have a storage space you may want to think of squirrelling the piece away for such an eventuality...
Third, how much is it? Will Mr. Piggy Bank stretch that far? The beauty of thrifted furniture is 'yes, I can afford it hurrah'.
Fourthly, do you LOVE it? This is the most important question of all. Think about it. Do not make a mistake for if you do it will haunt you for the rest of your life. If you walk away you may end up waking up sweating with nightmares at 2am and then you will have to go back to the store at the crack of dawn and wait for it to open and just hope against hope your beloved is still there. If it is still there then it was meant to be. If not, it wasn't meant to be but this will eat you alive for the rest of your born days...... just saying
Finally - do you need it, but honestly this is a silly question and I very rarely even make it this far down the list.
So, let's do a practical test shall we? The evidence::
I think we can agree right there that this was meant to be. Case closed.
It fits.
It is affordable.
I do love it so with all my little heart.
Thus ergo I neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed it.
I am a happy little bunny with the sideboard I have been looking for for a long long time and not a bit of laminate or formica in sight. Bliss.

ReplyDeleteVery nice piece! Did you line it or was it already? love the flowers. Nice little surprise i'm sure when you open the doors. I thrifted a very cool retro white dresser but when i did the lead paint test it was positive...was bummed but am on the lookout for a unique coffee table and console table.
