The Piled High Club

DSC_0008

New blog, same lame ass puns.

Winter has a way of just announcing it's arrival a little prematurely sometimes, doesn't it? Like a calling card of doom lest you forget it's all encompassing misery.

This past Sunday was one such day for us; a timely reminder of just how sucky it gets - cold, damp, dark, cold, cold, dark, dark, damp. Time for the winter piles :: a pile of woollens for the bed, some woollens in the wash for the hands, neck and head, and a humungous pile of reading matter for the coming months (some of it thrifted!)

That isn't the end of it by any means :: new piles will mount up - more books, some goto DVDs when daylight hours have sufficiently reduced to leave me comatose, piles of recipes for winter stodge and, of course, the blankets.

But as a starter, I'd say these were enough.

  3. Asalaamu alaikum sis, i just popped over and want to say a big thankyou for the jam making post - i made the black butter (basically - apple jam) recipe which was in the most recent edition of country living mag, and its very nice. Hoping to make more jams soon as we have 7 damson trees and lots of fruit to use up!

    I cant wait to see more pictures. Time to get baking since fall is here.. Heres a delicious recipe I just tried on the weekend, its some sort of cocoa crisp cake:

    Ingredients

    * 1 cup butter
    * 2 cups white sugar
    * 2 eggs
    * 1 cup sour cream
    * 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    * 2 cups all-purpose flour
    * 1 teaspoon baking powder
    * 1/8 teaspoon salt
    * 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
    * 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
    * 2 tablespoons melted butter
    * 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.

    2. In a large bowl, cream together 1 cup butter and white sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the sour cream and vanilla. Mix in 2 cups flour, baking powder, and salt. Spread 1/2 of batter in the prepared pan.

    3. Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl mix 1/3 cup flour, brown sugar, 2 tablespoons melted butter, and cinnamon. Sprinkle cake batter with 1/2 the filling. Spread second half of batter over the filling, and top with remaining filling. (i just put it all on top and a small amount of cocoa)

    4. Bake 35 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.

  5. Oh wow, such nice comments - and recipes! Today is a grey wintery day which requires stodge for mood enhancement! Don't have sour cream hm... what can I substitute for that? And where do you get your halal vanilla essence from? I can only find the alcoholic versions here. Maybe I can just use almond flavour.

    I need stodge.

    I hope the damsons get jammed up soon! Honestly, if you jam 7 trees worth you wont need to buy jam for a year. Goto ebay for discount bulk orders for jars - if you're in the UK I can recommend these people:
